Training Scheme Applications 2026:

The SMPCETS has been awarded n=6 trainee clinical scientist places for 2026, and the starting date for successful applicants will be 1st Sept 2026.  The application portal for these training positions (5x Medical Physics, 1x Rehab Engineering) will open on Wed 28th Jan 2026, and close on Fri 20th Feb 2026.  Please keep an eye on NHS Scotland Jobs for links to the application process.  A direct link to the posts will also be provided on this page when the advert goes live.  Posts will be funded at NHS Scotland band 6 (entry level), and funding will be available for up to 3.5 years, per post.

Please follow this link in order to access the 2026 application pages.  Note that the Clinical Engineering Rehab Post for 2026 will be based at the WestMARC Centre in Glasgow (NHS GGC).  The Medical Physics posts will be based at NHS Highland, NHS Grampian, NHS Tayside, NHS Lothian, and NHS GGC.

We will be pleased to accept applications from enthusiastic candidates who have a good (min. 2ii) BSc or MSc degree in a physical sciences or engineering subject – with a strong physics or engineering component.  It is important that candidates can clearly demonstrate in their own words that they understand the role that they are applying for.  The candidate should also express, using personal experience if available, why they feel that they are a suitable candidate.

For all applicants – please make it clear in your application (in the ‘why do you want to work for the NHS’ paragraph) whether you are applying for a Medical Physics or a Clinical Engineering training position.  If you neglect to do this then we will make this decision on your behalf.  Candidates who possess an engineering background but wish to apply for a medical physics training post (or vice versa) may do so, but please make it clear in your supporting statement the circumstances around why you wish to make this change.

Overseas candidates who require a Skilled Worker Visa or a Health and Care Worker Visa to work in the UK may apply, but clear demonstration of correct permission to work in the UK must be provided in your application – and this information will be checked.  This process is overseen by the UK Visas and Immigration Service.  If you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it may be possible to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa.  In your application please ensure that you alert us to this, if you need it.

Competition for places in 2026 is anticipated to be tough.  Last year (2025) we received approximately 300 applications for 4 training places.  Please bear this in mind as you go through the application process.

For those who would like to join an event online then we will be hosting a virtual open day on Mon 9th Feb 2026 (AM).  Please follow this link to register for the event.
